Unfurling

As if it were pirouetting itself to life, this ancient and massive magnolia tree unfurls its waxy green and suede-skinned leaves in the Virginia sun.   When I looked upward at this specimen, I was fascinated by its powerful but delicate grace with limbs that seemed to be simultanelously chaotic yet controlled as they shot outward from the tree’s braided trunk.  I just stood there gazing heavenward for the longest time, totally captivated by this beautiful whirling dervish.

The Rustic Chic Magnolia

Maybe it’s just my southerness showing, but I don’t believe there’s a more beautiful tree than the magnolia with their beautiful, showy blossoms (a bit messy to clean from the lawn once they’ve fallen) and a heady perfume.  The magnolia’s leaves, having a glossy, deep green top and a soft, buttery, suede-like underside, look great in arrangements this time of year.  Dramatic, romantic and most definitely Rustic Chic.
