Admit it, washing dishes is just not much fun. Reading about the history of dinner plates and their myriad of styles and colors is terrific fun, however! And so is the new book entitled “Dish – 813 Colorful, Wonderful Dinner Plates” written by Shax Riegler, the features editor at House Beautiful magazine. In “Dish”, Shax explores centuries of dinner plates from olden days to the present and, with beautifully simple photography by Robert Bean, showcases rarified and humble examples. They’re all pieces of gustatory history, items that we usually take for granted. But you’ll never look at your plates in the same way after reading this entertaining volume.

Everyone knows it’s just plain good manners to never arrive at a party empty-handed. Your host and hostess have gone to great lengths to make your visit a special and unforgettable event. And I was very appreciative and honored when I was asked by Shax Riegler, who writes “The Last Word” and “Send Us a Picture Of . . .” columns for House Beautiful magazine, to comment for the November issue on what I believe is the perfect hostess gift. I really love the pamplemousse (grapefruit) scented potpourri from Cote Bastide. It’s like bringing a chic little box of jewels to the party. Be sure to pick up a copy of HB’s November issue which is entitled “The Ultimate Entertaining Issue.” It’s full of wonderful entertaining ideas just in time for the holidays. Thanks to Shax and editor-in-chief, Newell Turner!
