If you are not familiar with Alexandra Smythe and Cate Clarke, co-authors of “The School of Flaunt Handbook” and of their web site (www.schoolofflaunt.com), you should be. Described as The Divas of Good Taste, Alexandra and Cate have dreamed up a tome in which they promise to navigate you safely through the snakepits and landmines of money, moda and manners.
With such interesting chapter titles as “Wardrobe – From Runway to Reality”, “Votre Maison – All Gated Communities Are Not Created Equal” and “Amour or Affair de Coeure – We Want to Light Your Fire!”, their Handbook is filled with tips and quizzes and a bevy of helpful hints to guide you safely into their “Flaunt Fabulous World.” (Full disclosure: I was very honored when the duo asked me to do the black and white illustrations for the Handbook. Thanks so much Alexandra and Cate!)
So before you even think about accepting that next dinner party invitation or stepping foot into Bergdorf’s again, spend a few hours with Alexandra and Cate and The Handbook, available through amazon.com. You’ll be glad you did and as the authors proudly state, “why go through life as ordinary, when it is just as easy to be extraordinary!”

. . . but maybe a few feathers will do. Sorry for the silence as of late. Will pick up the pace after the holiday. Have a good one!

Well, the Fashion Muses have been nagging me to design some Rustic Chic menswear. July flew by and the fall will be here before we realize. So with that in mind, I find myself dreaming of tweed, flannel, mohair, vicuna – the list goes on and on. Now if I can only find these. . . .

Well it looks like the weather’s going to be just fine for “the wedding of the decade” for Chelsea Clinton and her beau this weekend. The media say Hollywood is going to descend but they also say it’s going to be a simple “country” wedding. Somehow I’m not envisioning daisy-strewn fields in bucolic Rhinebeck. In any event, here’s a little something Blanchett might consider for the Rustic Chic shindig! And just in case this does turn out to be a red-carpet day, I call this creation “No Autographs, Please!!”

Looking ahead to the weather forecast for the weekend, it’s supposed to be a cool 74 degrees! Time to think about dressing for the fall. But why is it I can never find the clothes that hang in my head?

As I was supping at the breakfast table last evening my eyes kept studying the red wood barn that sits next to our stone barn. And I kept on staring at the weathered red beadboard siding and the striped orientation of their boards. The result is this striped gazar gown shown above. I was moved to draw it graphically and abstractly. Who knew a barn could be so inspiring?

OK, so the fashion muses have told me they’re moving in for the summer. So until I get this out of my system or they decide they have to travel on, we may be having a few more of these high glamour moments at Rustic Chic! Hope you all are having a good weekend!

OK, so there’s no swimming pool but I had to get the Rustic Chic reference in there somehow. I hope you don’t mind this slight divergence from my usual RC coverage, but the muses are still here . . . whispering . . . whispering. And what does Ms. Blanchett have to do with this? Nothing at all except one of my muses looks just like her! And remember, the next time you’re sitting by the tube watching some red carpet event to which none of us were invited and you see a few gowns that look familiar to you, just remember you saw them at Rustic Chic first!

When I started Rustic Chic I mentioned in my first post that sometimes my RC would be a little dressy and sometimes it could be a stretch to see how a post could be deemed such. Perhaps this week is one of those times. Sometimes it helps to dream of other worlds, to let your imagination take you to places you’ve never been or haven’t visited in a long time – all in an effort to bring you back home to your heart, dwelling at Rustic Chic. And so with that in mind, here’s a different kind of bridle (bridal) that one usually thinks of when discussing Rustic Chic. I call her “Cold Feet (The Runaway Bride)”.
