The Windmills of Your Mind

I have just returned from a long weekend on Shelter Island, New York.  Also known as “the unHamptons”, Shelter Island is a secluded, sleepy retreat of vacation homes for many from New York and Connecticut and other areas.  Accessible only by a ferry from its northern side or from the southern side via Sag Harbor, Shelter Island is low key and much less glitzy than its Hamptons sisters.  I snapped some photos of what I found to be some beautiful older residences while I was there but of all of them, this one that sported a windmill perched atop a tower was the most Rustic Chic.

I have always been fascinated by windmills.  And as I studied this contraption I was reminded of the famous song, “The Windmills of Your Mind”, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1969 and which was the theme  from the 1968 movie, “The Thomas Crown Affair”.

“Like a Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind”

    Really beautiful, and so unusual.
