Sometimes I miss having a formal dining room. And although most people these days only use them a few times in the year, we made it a point to use the room as much as possible in our first home, a turn of the last century Victorian which we restored in Bernardsville. The dining room was at its full-blown best when we hauled out the gaudy silver (for which I have a real weakness), a different assortment of stemware and the good china. Ages-old lilac bushes on the property provided flowers for the center. White lilacs actually have very little scent while the purple ones can be a bit stronger. It’s generally not a good idea to have scented flowers on the table during a dinner, but the colors of cream, white, lilac and spring green presented the perfect palette for a formal Rustic Chic spring dinner. Sometimes I miss this room very much.
