One of my favorite rustic chic artists is Jean-Edourd Vuillard, a French painter and printmaker associated with Les Nabis, a group of Post-Impressionist artists working in France in the 1890’s. He was born on November 11, 1868 and died June 21, 1940.
Vuillard’s work is composed mostly of domestic life and interior scenes as well as gardens. His soft, blurry colorations are tinged with humor and his subjects are often shown wearing intricate patterns which melt into the background. His art is hushed and peaceful – very rustic chic qualities.
An exhaustive collection of the artist’s work can be found in “Vuillard”, by Yale Press, 2003.
