The Rustic Chic Watermelon Basket

A staple of southern get-togethers during long hot summers is the watermelon basket.  I remember them at many a shower, picnic, wedding and other festive occasions.  When carved well, preferably with sawtooth-edged handle as shown in the photo above, watermelon baskets are elegant centerpieces.  Usually filled with melon balls made from watermelon flesh, the baskets can also be filled with a host of other fruit.  But I think they are at their rustic chic classic best when filled with melon balls made from watermelon (both red and yellow) as well as cantaloupe and honeydew.

  1. Those are darling, and this is an idea I will remember.

    • Thanks. I’ve always liked them too. Beautiful when done right – which is not that easy. For the grown-ups, soak the melon balls in a little vodka and freeze them.
